Drabbles for the tw100 challange
I'm much more likely to play with photos than with words, but the tw100 challange seemed like a good, well... challange, to take a chance and try something new. Enjoy, I hope... (I'd love feedback, pro or con)

Title: Journey's End
Author:rabecka
Characters: Jack
Challenge: 100 drabble challenge (Seduction Lessons, Life Before Torchwood, reverse fandom ST:TNG)
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: POTW

It should be funny. Jack Harkness, ex-Time Agent and conman, seduced by a 21st century girl and a U-boat captain. Not with sex, but with laughter, and running, and hands that reached out in friendship. So for a while, I belonged; with a Time Lord who saw everything, and a child who saw what I could be. Until the day I offered my life, and they took it, and never looked back.

Shit. I should have known better. Seduced and abandoned, like the girl in a bad romance novel. I suppose I should be glad they didn't leave me pregnant.

Title: No Place Like Home
Author:rabecka
Characters: Jack
Challenge: 100 drabble challenge (reverse fandom Buffy)
Rating: G
Spoilers: 2x12 (Fragments)

Torchwood. Not what anyone would consider a family. Except it was, sort of, for him. A place where people knew what, if not entirely who, he was. Where individuals died, but old hands told the new ones about him. Where they kept his history, and told his stories, so he didn't have to. Where, for a hundred years, they let him into their lives, and kept him sane.
Then, in a moment of madness and despair, it's gone. He wonders if Alex had any idea what he destroyed.
He'd learned to accept death, but could never handle being left behind.

-------------
Title: Unnatural Selection
Author:rabecka
Characters: Jack
Challenge: 100 drabble challenge (Alternate Universes, reverse fandom Buffy)
Rating: G
Spoilers: 1x05 (Small Worlds)
Summary: "They can make great storms... wild seas... turn the world to ice." - Jasmine

It's the 21st century, and everything's changed. But not like this. It was never supposed to be like this. One little girl, who didn't want to be saved, is safe. With them.

The rest? Well… it's just me now, forever roaming the damned ice. It's everywhere and always. Except…

I never slept much, after the Game Station. These days, I try not to sleep at all. Their idea of a joke, I guess. I wake up warm; the sun on my skin and the smell of summer in the air. I wake up surrounded by rose petals and laughter.

-----------
Title: The Awakening
Author:rabecka
Characters: Jack
Challenge: 100 drabble challenge (Alternate Universes, Sleeper, reverse fandom DW)
Rating: G
Spoilers: 2x03 (Sleeper)

Though he knew about Sleeper Agents, it was just weeks after the Year of Hell, and he couldn't be the cause of yet more pain. So he took the mind probe off Beth; let her believe it was a mistake, and let himself believe he could contain her. Until she changed. And locked down the hub. And killed his team. Until the bombs went off in Cardiff. And the remaining cells activated. And the missiles launched.

And when the message went out: "Objective accomplished, awaiting invasion force", it was far too late. There wasn't a damn thing he could do.

-------
AN: About the last two... I occassionally read reviews that have real trouble with Jack's actions in these 2 episodes. Personally, I think he made the choices he had to make. These 2 drabbles are my rebuttal.

All four of them are great.

Thank you.

Very nice, especially #2. :) And yes on the rebuttal - Jack does what is needed, and if it isn't nice, and isn't fluffy... well, neither is life. It's great having someone to be the conscience, but it's just as important to know when to ignore that conscience for the greater good. :)

Great stuff!

Thanks. Means a lot coming from you. And yeah, number 2... When I first saw the 1999 segment in Fragments, I flashed back to POTW. He obviously cared about these people, and you could see the same devastation. I love your pre-2000 Torchwood stories - you bring that whole era alive.

Aww, thank you. :) And yes, they quite deliberately played on the abandonment scene in PotW in that bit in Fragments - Jack has that same look of devastation and it clearly hits him just as hard. Harder, if anything - he's had a whole century to settle in and make himself comfortable there. Alex, in his way, thought he was doing the right thing, but he hit all of poor Jack's buttons there, leaving him stranded alone with the dead once more....

You should definitely play more!

I especially like the Small Worlds one...

Thank you. The Small Worlds one was the only one I wrote for this challenge - the others have been (mostly) sitting on my computer for awhile. The bunny hit when I was looking at tags for the Sleeper one, and thinking about why I wrote it.

All these were very good - I especially liked the first two.

Thank you. Those two were pretty much written together after I saw Fragments. There was just so much that struck me as similar about them.

*huggles the 1999 team* love that one

Oh and I completely second your rebuttals in the last two. Sometimes you have to make the tough choices and Jack makes them and I think he's right
rabecka From: rabecka Date: December 17th, 2008 07:10 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks. Must admit that I really wanted to smack the rest of the team at the end of Small Worlds...
rabecka From: rabecka Date: December 17th, 2008 07:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, I loved that segment. If, by any chance, you haven't discovered aeshna_uk's stories about the pre-2000 TW era, go run over there now. They're wonderful...

I actually wrote one myself about the 1999, I love them to bits for some reason

Loved all four of them

but the last one really hit home as I'd just watched Sleeper last night and I agree with you, Jack had no choice!

had to re-read 3 (cause I'm thick) and only now got it - ouch!

Brilliant!
rabecka From: rabecka Date: December 17th, 2008 07:59 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks so much. Have to admit, number 3 is my personal favorite. I can definitely see it being a bit oblique, though, if you didn't recall Jasmine saying "They can bring great storms, turn the world to ice...".

Given that the fairies seemed to (understatent of the decade coming) rather lack a sense of proportion, I just followed that to the logical conclusion. And the rest seemed in line with their "sense of humor".

Love them all, but the first is my favorite. I especially love the last line.

It took me two read throughs to get the Small Worlds one as well. (Because I'm silly and didn't read the header first and was confused.) :)

Great job!

Thank you. Just added a summary line to #3. Should have done it originally, I guess, but oh well...
